Christine Reyes
Candidate President-Elect

NHATA Membership:

I enthusiastically accept the nomination of President Elect of the NHATA. When I wrote to accept the nomination of treasurer two years ago, I opened with a hope for this first experience to accomplish two things: provide an opportunity to give back to the athletic training community at the state level and to represent the beginning of a long career of leadership experiences in our profession. With the acceptance of this nomination, I continue to fulfill both of these goals, but add many more. I have learned so much in the almost two years as part of the NHATA executive board, and while I know that not all elements of every leadership position can be thoroughly prepared for, I feel equipped with a new baseline of personal and professional resources to lead the NHATA community in this role, if selected.

Throughout my time within the profession from student to certified professional to educator, my main interests have revolved around the factors that lead to successful transition of athletic training students into practitioners who persist within our profession. This intrigue propelled me through a Master’s degree in Leadership Development and has been the main research motivator as I complete my Doctorate of Philosophy in Health Science with a concentration in Athletic Training. As our profession begins the transition as outlined by the CAATE and the Strategic Alliance, the continuance of our students and young professionals becomes more and more imperative. I am invested in topics and programs that enhance our membership and would continue to do so in this role.

Formal goals for my tenure as President Elect and eventually President of the NHATA are three-fold; the first being accomplished during the tenure of President Elect by being an active participant to understand all key roles of President that must occur weekly, monthly and yearly. This would include identification of regional and national stakeholders, and current contacts of the NHATA, District 1 and the EATA that are unfamiliar to me. Ideally it would also include the development of a SWOT analysis to provide outline for my term as president; identifying areas of Success that can and should be continued as well as Weakness that must be quickly addressed as well as untapped Opportunities and unaddressed Threats. Understanding and connecting with stakeholders at every level of AT leadership early and often especially during this time as president elect, I believe, will be key in seeking timely guidance, support and assistance in the successful development of future advocates for our profession, and our association.

Two goals for during my presidency will be to increase interprofessional contacts, experiences and partnerships as well as student/young professional engagement both with certified members but also in experiences that broaden and deepen their experiences with professional advocacy. Interprofessional engagement is instrumental in many ways. From assistance during times of legislation attacks to new skill attainment and breaking down barriers regarding what professionals in our field do; our peers in like professions can be influential at making forward progress. As for our students, we must lead by example. Modeling what engagement, service and leadership look like at the institutional, state, regional, and national levels demystifies the process. Breaking down these barriers so our students feel both empowered and prepared to seek out these types of experiences, regardless of the state or district they work in, will provide them meaningful contacts in the profession, thereby increasing their potential to retain and engage in our profession long-term.

I have worked diligently and consistently to lead in every role or leadership opportunity I have been provided thus far and will continue to do so for the membership of the NHATA if selected to this position. I appreciate the opportunity to speak into my intention to serve, and hope the membership see and value the potential I can bring to our executive board. I appreciate the nomination and welcome any additional questions at your convenience.

Regards,

Christine D. Reyes, MA, NH LAT, ATC
