2010 NHATA Clinical Symposium and Annual Meeting

BOW, NH (May 16, 2010) - The New Hampshire Athletic Trainers' Association held its 2010 Clinical Symposium and annual business meeting at Bow High School on Sunday May 16. The clinical symposium serves as a continuing education opportunity for certified athletic trainers in and around the state of New Hampshire on topics pertinent to the field of athletic training and is offered in conjunction with the NHATA's annual business meeting.

This year's featured speakers were Dr. Michael Giovan, orthopedic surgeon with Plymouth Orthopedics and Sports Medicine clinic and Cluadette Peck LCMHC, RD, LD of Dartmouth College Health Services. Dr. Giovan presented on Scapulothoracic Evaluation and Management placing strong emphasis on recognition and implementation of intervention techniques to reduce the incident of upper arm injuries as well as the reduction of the need for surgical intervention to resolve these injuries. Ms. Peck presented on Considerations for Sport Nutrition focusing on practical application of dietary management for the athletic population. Ms. Peck also discussed nutritional myths and recognition of common dietary behavior problems seen with both male and female athletes.

During the clinical symposium the NHATA awarded its 2009 New Hampshire Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer of the Year award to Sean Cox ATC, a founding member of the NHATA and head athletic trainer at Salem High School. Mr. Cox has a long history of service to the field of athletic training in the state of New Hampshire and has previously been recognized for his efforts by the National Athletic Trainer's Association in 2007 receiving its Athletic Trainer Service Award.

To conclude the 2010 clinical symposium, Laura Decoster of the New Hampshire Musculoskeletal Institute led an informative session on the New Hampshire Advisory Council on Sport-Related Concussion: Sport-Related Concussion Consensus Statement. The consensus statement is a joint effort of many organizations spear headed by the Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire. The 2010 NHATA business meeting preceded the clinical symposium with long time executive board member Peter Thurber directing the meeting. The meeting was highlighted with discussion on the NHATA's legislative efforts in regards to Senate Bill 423: An act relative to health insurance coverage for licensed athletic trainer services.

At the conclusion of the meeting winners of the SLACK Inc. book raffle were announced. Kelly Gadberry ATC won The Myofascial Release Manual, Fourth Edition and Mara Moffie who won Clinical Pathology for Athletic Trainers: Recognizing Systemic Disease, Second Edition. Ms. Moffie, owner of Precision Athletic Training promptly donated the text to Bow High School head athletic trainer Cliff Chulada.

The NHATA would like to thank SLACK Inc. for their book contribution, Education Committee Chair Keith Belmore ATC for his efforts in preparing this year's clinical symposium, Cliff Chulada for his effort in hosting this years event, and the NHATA members in attendance for making the 2010 event a successful one.
