The 2016 New Hampshire Athletic Trainers’ Association Student Symposium was held Sunday April 10th at Colby-Sawyer College.  The symposium serves as an opportunity for the athletic training programs of New Hampshire to come together and share scholarly work completed by students.

NHATA President Chuck Carter ATC greeted the symposium attendees to this year event.  Highlighting President Carter’s welcome was the acknowledgement of UNH’s Dan Sedory and his efforts in assisting the NHATA in defeating HB1213, a bill to repeal athletic training licensure in New Hampshire.

This year’s programming was driven by the following student presentations:

Effects of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation and Static Stretching Techniques on Hamstring Range of Motion – Zac Kershaw,  Christopher Finlay, Michael Sheridan, & Patrick Wyman from Colby-Sawyer College

Incidence of Concussion Among NCAA Division I,II, III and Club Collegiate Male Ice Hockey Players – Paige Tuttle and Kelsey Cognetta  from Keene State College

Balance Effectiveness: Wii Fit vs. BOSU – Jodi Dumayne and Kylah Jones from Colby-Sawyer College

The Effects of Strength and Proprioception on Landing Mechanics – John Laviolette, Miles Derrick, Rachel Springmann, and Sara Roy from Colby-Sawyer College

Critically Appraised Topic: The Effectiveness of Balance Training Programs in Reducing the Incidence of Lower Extremity Injuries in Female Athletes under the Age of 24 Alaina Sarvak, Natalie Pollet and Linda Budzynski from Plymouth State University

2016 Student Presenters

District 1 Director Tim Weston M.Ed ATC addressed the audience in the afternoon identifying opportunities for student involvement at the state, district and national levels.  Pete Thurber MPH, M.Ed, ATC provided this year’s keynote address on Conflict Management.

A part of each year’s symposium is the NHATA Quiz bowl conducted by NHATA Student Committee Chair Liesl Lindley of Plymouth State.  Coming in first this year out of 20 competing teams was the team of Lauren Gardner, Alexa McNamara, Tanisha McGreevy and Hannah Wahltmann from the University of New Hampshire.

To close the symposium the 2016 NHATA Student Scholarships and District 1 NH Dan Sedory Scholarship were presented.  Nicole Pollet and Aliana Sarvak of Plymouth State were awarded NHATA Scholarships.  Zac Kershaw of Colby-Sawyer was awarded the District 1 NH Dan Sedory Scholarship.
